Home security has come a long way in recent years. With technology advancing at lightning speed, it’s easier than ever to protect your home – and 2025 could be the ideal year to do it.
Here are some easy ways to increase home security and make your home a safer place to be.
Upgrade to smart locks
The days of having to fumble for your keys in the dark or worrying about whether you locked the house are long gone, thanks to smart locks.
Smart locks allow you to lock and unlock your doors using your smartphone. Some even let you create temporary access codes for guests or contractors, which automatically expire after a certain amount of time. Even better is the fact that these devices can be integrated into whatever smart home security you’ve already got, giving you full control over your home.

Invest in advanced surveillance
Security cameras used to be things that businesses or public buildings used, and the footage you got from them was never very good. This is why cameras used to be more about deterrence than anything else. These days, however, the best cameras come with high-definition video, night vision, and even real-time alerts that go straight to your phone. Some of the systems are so advanced they use AI to recognise faces and notify you if anyone unfamiliar is around your home.
The best place to put these cameras is at the entry points to your home. That includes doors, windows, and your driveway. If privacy is something you’re worried about, you can always choose cameras that come with a special privacy mode so they don’t record when you’re at home.
Secure your perimeter
Your home’s first line of defence is its perimeter. Fences, gates, and even your landscaping play an important role in keeping your home safe and unwanted visitors out. An electric gate is a good option, but regular maintenance or electric gate repair is important to keep intruders out. If you notice any issues, always deal with them promptly rather than putting it off.
You might also want to consider installing motion-activated lights and smart sensors on your driveway and around your home. These can act as a powerful deterrent to intruders – and deterrence is always the best option. Lights will also make it safer and easier for you to move around your home at night.
Choose a smart doorbell
Smart doorbells are another great way to increase home security. These handy devices let you see, hear, and even speak to anyone who’s at your door, even if you’re away from home. They have motion sensors that trigger an alert when someone comes close to your door, even if they don’t ring the bell, so you’re covered no matter what’s happening outside your home.
If you pair your smart doorbell with a camera system, you’ll have excellent coverage around your home and ensure that every visitor you get (whether they’re expected or not) is accounted for.
Reinforce windows and doors
Technology is amazing, and it’s wise to use as much of it as you can to keep your home safe and protected. However, there’s also something to be said for the more practical options you can take.
One very basic but very helpful idea is to reinforce your windows and doors. This includes installing deadbolts, putting shatterproof film over the glass, and even installing security bars in vulnerable areas. You can combine all these measures with smart tech for extra peace of mind.
Protect your wifi network
A secure wifi network is something else you’ll need if you want to really protect your home, but it’s also something that a lot of people don’t think about. If you’ve got your physical building covered but hackers can still get into your wifi, then you’re not as protected as you could be.
Take a look at your wifi now – is it secure? You need strong passwords, encryption has to be enabled, and you might even want to consider a separate network for your smart security devices, just to be on the safe side. Updating your network on a regular basis can also help protect against the latest threats.
Get to know your neighbours
Sometimes the simplest solutions really are the best solutions. One of the easiest ways to increase home security is to build strong, positive relationships with your neighbours.
If you can create a sense of community where everyone looks out for one another, then even the smallest problem can easily be spotted and dealt with. Neighbours can let you know if they see something that doesn’t seem right around your home, and you can do the same for them. You could even set up a neighbourhood watch group for reassurance.
